What I’ve Learn After Living in Japan for 11 Months

We are vastly approaching our 1  year anniversary of living in Japan and I have been meaning to post an update for a while. We are learning so much and really enjoy life here.  That is an understatement, WE LOVE LIVING IN Japan. Every single day is a new adventure! Here are a few of the things we have discovered over the past 11 months. Please excuse the quality of these photos. All were snapped with my trusty Iphone.

What I have learned after living in Japan for 11 Months

1. I am a master at backing into parking spaces. Before moving here I don’t think I ever backed into a parking space. Not once. But here in Japan, it is the thing to do. Parking spots are so tight and traffic is so heavy that it is much easier to leave a space if your car is facing nose out. So when in Rome. I practiced a lot on base before attempting to do it in the real world. Each time I parked successfully I would get excited and high five my husband. The funny thing is, now every time I park my car my two year old and one year old cheer for me and say “good job mama.” They knows it took a lot of time and effort for me to master the art of backing into parking spaces.

2. When shopping with a credit card/debit card off base the cashier will always look at me before swiping it and put one finger up.  And then he/she waits for me to answer. I am assuming they want to know if I want to pay for the purchase in one payment, thus the one finger. I always say “hai” which is yes in Japanese. It seems to work and I have not had a problem yet. Hmmm. Hope that’s what it means anyway.

3. Thrift stores here in Japan are AMAZING. People take such great care of their things and then consign them to thrift stores or recycle centers. We personally bought our kitchen table at a thrift store.

4. Car drivers in Japan are not afraid of color. You will find both men and women driving cars in beautiful shades of teal, orange, and even pink. I love it actually. The road is always full of colorful vehicles.

5.Most places here are very kid friendly. Restrooms have accommodations for kids including toilets for toddlers. Restaurants always supply cute little bowls and cups for kids along with child size silverware.  Car dealerships have mini play areas for children to use while their parents are car shopping. I’ve even seen a crib in the middle of a dealership before.

6. Always carry Japanese cash known as Yen. Japan is not a credit/debit card society like the States.  It is not fun getting a bill from a restaurant and then realizing they do not accept credit cards. Yikes. How do you say “I will wash dishes” in Japanese?

Susie Booe - Love your post about life in Japan! I can hardly wait to get there. Only one month from today! Yeah!!!!

Josh Pabst (http://www NULL.pabstphoto NULL.com) - That was a fun read. I’ve traveled a lot in China and Korea, but have never made it to Japan. Maybe you could add some pictures of your kitch table or some shots of the thrift stores – I suspect many readers would like to see both.

Make a Splash: Rain Puddle Photo Shoot

Sometimes you just need to jump in a puddle and make a big splash.

Hope you are having a good summer. We sure are!

I want to challenge you to dust off your fancy camera and get out and photograph life as it happens. This is coming from an Iphone/Instagram addict. I have to MAKE myself bust out the big gun. But i am always glad when I do. And you will be too.

I’d love to see your images of your summer activities. Please feel free to post them to my Facebook (https://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/ReneeBooe?ref=hl) page for all to see.

Happy shooting!

Eli & Sawyer’s Cherry Blossom Photo Session

Life has been busy. The past seven months, well really eighteen months, have been a whirl wind. I am just starting to feel normal again. Ok, maybe not normal. Being a mother of two and living on the other side of the planet away from everything familiar is still very new AND far from normal for me. But I feel like I am getting the hang of it and adjusting to this life.

I’ve rather missed sharing personal stories with you on the blog. I love to connect with y’all this way. My time in front of the computer has been very limited now that my almost three year old has give up naps. But that is ok. I can blog later. He won’t be this age forever. So when he asks me to play trains with him I feel it important to stop what I am doing and make that happen. I know it won’t be long before the roles are reversed and I am begging him to hang out with me.

I do share a lot of my daily life on Instagram. Ok. Let’s be honest. I post tons of pictures of my kids on Instagram every day. My kids and our adventures in Japan. If you have a smart phone or Ipad and are interested in what I am doing you are more than welcome to follow me there. (http://instagram NULL.com/reneebooe)

Now for this photo session. Last year I did a spring session of my kids in Texas. You can see those images here  (http://reneebooephotography NULL.com/eli-sawyer-spring-mini-session-2012/) I really can not believe that was over a year ago. It is crazy how much they have grown. The most recent session I posted of them together, click here to see (http://reneebooephotography NULL.com/brother-and-sister-photo-shoot/), was taken back in July.  So in my opinion it’s been way too long since I did a session of the two of them together and shared here on the blog. Don’t you agree.

I will confess that photographing your own children is very difficult. I am super thankful for my dear friend Lindsay who accompanied me during this shoot and tried to make Sawyer smile. She is currently teething and suffering from allergies. Under those conditions she did pretty well for me. Even so, she is never really impressed with my camera. She is totally over it. Eli on the other hand will play along for a little bit. I must get the shots quick though or his patience wears out. I am happy with the results though and am thankful to have images of them from their first spring in Japan with the famous cherry blossoms.

Lindsay Gough - Renee’, your kids are so cute!! I hope that everything is going well for you on the other side of the world. I love to read your blog and you’ve inspired me to take more day to day pictures. Because of this, I have gotten some great candid pics that would have just passed by with out any proof that they happened. So, Thank you:)

Meg (http://coloringspirit NULL.com) - Ohhhh goodness. How CUTE! The third from the last picture is my favorite. I have a huge weakness for fedoras.

Clinton Family Portraits in Japan

I am so excited to share these family portraits with you! I have been wanting to do a destination photo shoot ever since we arrived in Japan.  There are so many awesome places to photograph in this country. So needless to say, I was beyond thrilled when this great family decided to do their family portrait session in Sawai, Japan.

I absolutely love this family. We were neighbors over five years ago and are now neighbors again. You got to love that about military life.  Lindsay and Chris had several goals for this session. First off, their little man Chase just recently turned one! So we had to photograph him at this fun stage of childhood. They also wanted photos that would portray their life in Japan without being too “Japanesey”.  Challenge accepted. I totally understand this desire even though it may be difficult to explain.  Hopefully I was able to achieve both those goals.

I am super excited to start offering destination sessions here in Japan. If you have a favorite city and want professional portraits taken there just let me know and we can make that happen!
